Earlier this week a fellow classmate sent me a job posting for an entry level Account Coordinator position in a PR Agency. It read as follows:
We have immediate opportunities for both intermediate level PR Consultants as well as entry level Account Coordinator positions in the Toronto office. The ideal candidates will have relevant technology and/or entertainment industry, social and digital media experience in an agency environment.
It is interesting how knowledge of and proficiency with Social Media appears to have become a requirement for the up-and-coming PR professional. Although I was vaguely familiar with blogs, podcasts and wiki sites prior to entering the Centennial program, I have become so much more aware of the potential power of these tools within the past four months. Exposure to social media is one of the many strengths of Centennial College`s Corporate Communications and Public Relations program and definitely a defining feature when comparing it to similar programs (shameless plug – yes I know). In all honesty, the program is the reason why I am starting this blog.
As I enter the blogosphere I already have a number of reservations. Will I have enough new insights to be able to post on a regular basis? Will what I say be of any value to anyone? And since as Public Relations professionals we are always trying to influence perception, what impression of myself am I leaving through my postings? Many of my fellow course mates have expressed similar concerns so I know I am not alone in my semi-paranoia. But I suspect that at the end of the day it is more about the process than anything else. It is almost like riding a bicycle or starting any other new activity – the more you do it, the better you get at it.
I hope that those of you already entrenched in this experience will share your comments and be a part of this process with me. With that said, I think it is time I formally introduce myself to the social media world.
Hi, I am Rhonda Bowen. Welcome to my blog.
.
There’s nothing more daunting than hitting that ‘Publish’ button for the first time. The best way to lean the ropes is to get into the tangle. Welcome.
Well, you’re off to a great start! Don’t fret, you’ll fall into rhythm soon enough…be careful though…blogging can be addictive!
lol
You’ve got a great writing style, I look forward to your future posts.
I agree with Lisa. You write very well, Rhonda. And, that’s a refreshing thing to see because too many people think writing well online isn’t as important as in print.
Good to see you here : )
For my first post, I was a bit apprehensive but then I said it is time to do this. It was time to say, “Hi world, I’m here!” Once you get over the initial fright, you’ll write like never before!
Write what you’re passionate about, and the rest will fall into place. Our insights, however small, are important! It’s all perspective!
I completely understand your apprehension. I too share the same feelings. However, as you mentioned, I am sure that with practice we will become well versed in the world we call the blogisphere.
